Storing marketplace inventory at a fulfillment warehouse

By Shipperty · Updated

Fulfillment warehouse storage keeps stock for FBS orders or holds a batch before an FBO shipment. Pricing needs volume, duration and placement details; order handling needs clear SKU records. Use this guide to prepare those details and confirm storage terms before goods arrive.

Why store goods at a fulfillment warehouse?

See the FBS vs FBO guide for workflow differences. Confirm placement and whether your specific goods can be handled before sending them.

How to estimate volume

For a rectangular box, use external dimensions after packing: length × width × height in meters. Divide each centimeter measurement by 100 to convert it to meters. For different box sizes, calculate each group’s volume and add the results.

Example: ten identical boxes

Box dimensions: 40 × 30 × 25 cm.
One box: 0.40 × 0.30 × 0.25 = 0.03 m³.
Ten boxes: 0.03 × 10 = 0.30 m³.

This is geometric box volume for an estimate. It does not automatically determine billable volume, cell count or pallet count: agree on actual placement and the billing basis with the warehouse.

For palletized cargo, provide assembled package dimensions and weight. Product quantity alone is insufficient: a hundred units of different products can occupy different volumes. If measurements or weighing are needed, check those separate operations under additional services.

What determines storage costs?

Shipperty’s storage rate section offers different billing bases: cubic-meter volume charged daily or monthly, and a full or partly occupied cell charged monthly. Choose the applicable option; do not automatically add these entries for the same placement.

  • Billing basis. Confirm billable volume or cell count and placement.
  • Period. Agree on storage start and end, partial period treatment and changes to terms if duration changes.
  • Stock changes. Clarify how arrivals and dispatches affect recorded volume during the period.
  • Other work. Unloading, receiving, picking, packing and transportation are separate operations.

For constant agreed volume and daily billing, use volume × rate per m³ per day × billable days. For monthly rates and cells, use the applicable rate table terms; do not prorate by days without agreement.

The rate table has a separate storage condition while goods are packed for marketplaces. Check eligibility, duration and subsequent charges for your batch. It does not mean all FBS stock is stored free of charge. See the fulfillment cost guide for the overall work budget.

Reconcile stock and plan replenishment

Start with confirmed receiving results. SKUs, colors, sizes and quantities must match agreed records. Physically arrived quantity and quantity usable for orders can differ: for example, disputed goods may still need a decision.

Shipperty stock balances are available in your customer account. Agree on which data to use for picking requests and how to reconcile changes after arrivals and dispatches. For separate SKU counts or inventory checks, see the inventory section.

  • Plan replenishment by required SKU and variant, rather than total product count.
  • Allow for incoming delivery, receiving and readiness for picking.
  • Where batches, dates or shelf life matter, supply those details and agree on handling before arrival.
  • Before a large dispatch, confirm available quantities and preparation instructions.

Planning storage amid uncertainty

In the current uncertain environment, consider more than rates and distance to the marketplace. Fire, external damage, restricted access and site disruptions can affect goods and dispatch dates. Plan how sales could continue if one location becomes temporarily unavailable.

A smaller warehouse within a distributed storage plan

A compact warehouse with regular replenishment can hold working stock for upcoming orders while reserves stay at another address. This reduces inventory concentration at one location. After a local incident, some stock remains at the other site; continued dispatch depends on its availability and ability to prepare orders.

Size working stock around sales and replenishment lead time. Distribution needs separate stock records and additional transportation: compare those expenses with the value of inventory concentrated at one address.

  • Location and access. Check surroundings, vehicle access and whether goods can be collected if operating arrangements change.
  • Storage conditions. Ask about fire precautions, product restrictions and access procedures. Warehouse size alone does not determine protection.
  • Disruption response. Agree on a notification contact, access to stock records and a possible backup site.
  • Liability and insurance. Review contract terms before handing over goods and, if insurance applies, its coverage and exclusions.

Discuss working stock, replenishment frequency and procedures for an operational interruption with your fulfillment provider. Confirm batch distribution and backup storage availability separately.

What to provide for a storage agreement

  1. Product list: SKUs, variants and quantities.
  2. Box or pallet count, external dimensions and packed cargo weight.
  3. Planned arrival date and expected storage duration.
  4. Task: FBS stock, FBO preparation or storage of ready packages.
  5. Expected replenishment and dispatches; required warehouse operations.
  6. Product and handling characteristics, relevant batches or dates.

Mark approximate details as estimates. Before work starts, confirm actual data, placement, price and timing. Use the warehouse brief template to put complete instructions together.

Questions and answers

Can storage be calculated from product quantity alone?

Product quantity does not determine occupied volume. Supply box or pallet dimensions and weight, then agree on placement and billable volume or cell count. Geometric box volume helps prepare a request but does not replace agreement on the billing basis.

Should daily and monthly storage rates be added together?

Choose the applicable billing basis for one placement: volume per day or month, or cells per month. Agree separately on the period, stock changes and partial periods; a monthly rate cannot automatically be prorated by day.

Does free storage during packing cover all FBS stock?

The rate table has a specific storage condition while goods are packed for marketplaces. Confirm eligibility, duration and subsequent charges for the batch. It does not mean all FBS working stock is stored free of charge.

How should risks affect warehouse selection?

Assess location, access, fire precautions, liability terms and disruption procedures. A smaller warehouse holding working stock, with reserves at another address, can reduce inventory concentration at one location. Site size alone does not guarantee safety; confirm backup storage and dispatch availability.

Storage options are described in Shipperty’s warehouse rate table. Confirm current rates, placement, recorded volume and duration for your goods before arrival.
